Install FUTO Notes on macOS

FUTO Notes for macOS is a signed, notarized DMG that runs on macOS 11 or later, on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Download it, drag the app into Applications, and open it. After that, the app updates itself.

Requirements

  • macOS 11 or later.
  • An Apple silicon or Intel Mac. The download is a universal build, so the same file works on both.

There is no Mac App Store or Homebrew version.

Download

Get the DMG from the download section on the homepage, or from the latest GitLab release. The file is named FUTO-Notes-<version>-universal.dmg.

Install

  1. Open the DMG.
  2. Drag FUTO Notes into the Applications folder.
  3. Eject the DMG, then open FUTO Notes from Applications or Launchpad.

The app is signed with FUTO’s Developer ID (FUTO Holdings, Inc.) and notarized by Apple, so Gatekeeper opens it without a warning about an unidentified developer.

Run the app from Applications, not from inside the DMG. An update replaces the app where it sits, and it can’t do that inside a read-only disk image.

Where your notes go

By default, notes are plain markdown files in a futo-notes folder inside your Documents folder. You can point the app at a different folder. See where FUTO Notes stores your notes.

Updates

The Mac app checks for new versions and shows an install button in the bottom-right corner when one is ready. Installing downloads the update, verifies its signature, replaces the app, and relaunches it. You can turn the checks off in Settings. See how FUTO Notes updates.

Uninstall

Quit FUTO Notes and drag it from Applications to the Trash. That removes the app but not your notes: the futo-notes folder in Documents (or whichever folder you chose) stays where it is. Delete it yourself if you want the notes gone too.
